Brief CV: Jiri Mekyska is a junior researcher and member of SPLab (Signal Processing Laboratory) at the Department of Telecommunications
at Brno University of Technology. His research interest lies in the field of speech signal analysis and its application in biomedicine. In this field he develops neurological disorders analysis systems and algorithms of feature extraction. He deals with the hand-written text analysis, thermal image processing and information theory as well.

Abstract:

Speech signal processing is one of the popular non-invasive techniques of neurological disorders analysis. People with diseases like Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease or schizophrenia have different speech dysfunctions. A possibility to objectively quantify these dysfunctions is a step for a better and more efficient diagnosis. The aim of this lecture is to describe the whole process of neurological disorders analysis using speech signal processing. There will be described the most common speech dysfunctions, suitable speech tasks, local speech features (basic features, non-linear dynamic features, features based on empirical mode decomposition EMD), global speech features (description of tongue movement), high-level speech features (some statistics), different approaches of feature selection and possible applications of these techniques in a medical and pharmaceutical industry.
